There’s not much rigour in a lot of contemporary art.... My subject matter does take heavily from my opinions on current affairs; I just wish that what goes on in the world affected the greater number of the population in a similar way. I don’t think art can change the world – but I do think it can record a position that honestly reports on an individual’s challenge to the official line.”
Born in 1965, contemporary artist Guy Denning is the founder of the Neomodern group and part of Bristol’s urban art scene. He began drawing as a child and first started experimenting with oil paintings aged 11, when he was given an old oil paint set by his father. Denning was hooked and despite being declined from several art colleges in the 1980’s, continued to follow his passion whilst studying Art History with The Open University.
Guy Denning art is often characterised by powerful, expressive brush strokes and the use of stencils and collaged text. His recent work has become more figurative while his street art draws upon his political influences.
Since 2007, Guy has been working with Red Propeller Gallery in Kingsbridge with his first show, based around the twin towers terrorist attack, receiving high acclaim and propelling him into the mainstream art scene. Our close relationship has continued to this day and we are able to offer a range of original Guy Denning artwork for sale, as well as Guy Denning prints.
